Open Figure Drawing

Open class. No registration required. $15 per session. $10 for alumni.

The primary focus of the Open Figure Drawing is to allow students at any level, beginning to advanced, to work from a live model. The class features a range of both short and longer poses to encourage a flexibility that is essential to the craft of drawing. Students can use any variety of mediums they have on hand. Drawing supplies can also be purchased from the Academy’s Art Store. Open Figure Drawing is a great environment for people who have never drawn the figure from life, as well as a place for experienced artists to further hone their skills through ongoing practice.

Encaustic

Expanding your Encaustic Horizons

July 29-31, 10am to 3 pm

fee $350

Instructor Kathryn Bevier

Are you ready to explore painting with wax? Join Kathryn Bevier for a 4th year returning to Lyme Academy College of Fine Art. She will walk you through the basic fundamentals of the encaustic process and then you will have the opportunity to go further through focusing on several techniques, with plenty of hands on time for creating your own art work.

The encaustic medium offers a fantastic array of opportunities to work with all sorts of mixed media products. From pastels and pigment sticks we will explore the various ways in which to incorporate mixed media in a sound and archival way. We will begin with basic collage and image transfer methods and then move into exploring the addition of pastels and other dry media ending with the use of pigment sticks. You will be amazed at how versatile this medium is and the interesting effects you can achieve.

This is a highly exploratory workshop where the focus will be on opening up to the spontaneous nature of creativity, while also learning the proper ways of working with mixed media as it pertains to encaustic.

Encaustic

3 Dimensional Forms Meet Wax

August 1-2, 10am to 3pm

fee $225

Instrutor Kathryn Bevier

Use the encaustic medium to fuse sculptural form with the wax painting technique. In this class you will have the opportunity to create a variety of simple forms and structures using recyclable materials and found objects as your armature. Once created, we will consider how the addition of color will play a role in the forms created. Finally, we will use the encaustic technique of fusing liquid wax onto the forms to complete our structures.  No prior encaustic experience required.

Walking Tour Townscape Painting Workshop with Michael Viera

Aug 19th - 23rd

9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuition $850

Stobart (rain/critiques)

In 1665 a group of colonists from the west side of the Connecticut River separated from the Saybrook colony in what became known as the “Loving Parting.” In 1855 this new colony, called Lyme, was divided to create the current towns of Lyme and Old Lyme.

Based on the Walking Tours of Lyme Street, this one week workshop takes advantage of the art inspiring properties of historical Old Lyme. Follow in the footsteps of the Old Lyme Impressionists and paint the town. Tour is enhanced by talks from the Historical Society and a visit to the Florence Griswold Museum.

Instructor: Michael Viera, B.F.A., Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts; M.F.A., New York Academy of Art

Mr.Viera has awards from the National Arts Club, New York and The New Haven Paint and Clay Club, where his work is part of their permanent collection.

Working with both Figurative Narrative and in Landscape, Michael emotes depth of space and mood through selective brushwork and illuminating glazes.

His paintings have been described as: Reserved intensity, unique in style that incorporates haunting light and depth of texture with clean geometric compositions.

Michael Viera is represented by one of the most respected art dealers in NYC and the Hamptons, Peter Marcelle, and has shown most recently in NYC and Santa Fe, NM.

Classical Drawing Boot Camp with Rick Lacey

July 15th - 19th

9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuition $850

Stobart Studio

Based on the Atelier model, this week long boot camp concentrates the student in lengthy study through direct, focused observation. The morning session is dedicated to the art of cast drawing. Measurements, comparisons and intense analysis emphasize the structure necessary for drawing. The afternoons are dedicated to the study of figure drawing from a life model in a continued pose. Attention is paid to set up and final execution over the course of a week.

Instructor: Rick Lacey, B.F.A. Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

Mr. Lacey has received both the American Visions Award and the John Stobart Fellowship Award.

Rick Lacey's figurative cosmology bridges time to set modern subjects against a backdrop reminiscent of the prairies of the early American West or the homesteads of Colonial New England. He credits early-American box camera portraiture as an influence on his present oeuvre.

Rick is represented by Cooper & Smith Gallery in Essex.

Animal Sculpture with John O'Reilly

Jun 24th-28th

9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Tuition $850

Stobart Studio

Sculpting animals is a time honored tradition. The founder of the Lyme Academy, Elisabeth Gordon Chandler, began her art career sculpting her beloved dog to cope with her grief after he passed away. Sculpting an animal from direct observation is a invaluable learning opportunity. Comparative anatomy, overall structure and form variations will be explored while choosing the proper gesture or behavior to suit your vision. Workshop participants will sculpt live from a horse or a dog.

Instructor: John O' Reilly, B.F.A. Columbus College of Art and Design, M.F.A. New York Academy of Art

"John O’Reilly uses graceful lines and nuanced gestures to give his anatomically rigorous sculptures the illusion of life. The balance and subtlety of O’Reilly’s pieces highlight the functionality of form, while his immaculate fabrication emphasizes its inherent beauty. The perfect classicism of O’Reilly’s work also houses a quiet emotional truth, rewarding contemplative viewers beyond the enjoyment of his superb craftsmanship alone."- The Blue Review.

John's latest solo show was through the RH Gallery in NYC.
